As a businessman, Abraham S. Anderson, MD, was an innovator, demonstrated by his initial investment in Coastal Pharmaceutical Company, one of the first, if not the first, interracial pharmaceutical companies in the American South, as a young physician in the mid-1970's.

"Founding physician of Gynecology Associates, Ltd, in Norfolk, VA, Dr. Anderson grew, together with his colleagues, a medical practice with multiple offices, including in Portsmouth and Chesapeake, VA, predominantly owned and managed by physicians of color. Gynecology Associates became known for its dedicated service and commitment to communities of color and immigrant communities, those without medical insurance, and military families for almost 50 years." [1]

He owned the commercial property in which his offices were located, and further invested in commercial, residential, and agricultural real estate both in the United States and abroad, including in his native Caribbean.  Quite frankly, he dreamed of founding his own dairy goat farm one day, inspired by the farms of his own childhood, founded and run by his father, a trained Agriculturalist.  Abraham Anderson, MD, was, indeed, a longtime subscriber to the Dairy Goat Journal.

As one of the first OB/GYNs in the the Hampton Roads/Tidewater area to make a significant investment in various ultrasound and laser technologies, Dr. Abraham Anderson broke new ground when he established a separate healthcare business in Chesapeake, Virginia, right across from his former Chesapeake office in Eden Way, in order to provide ultrasound services only for those in need across the region.  The ensuing advent of the non-medical fetal ultrasound, or "keepsake ultrasound", towards the end of his career was something which he had actually predicted decades prior, although he ultimately chose not to engage in this business, preferring to focus upon the medical needs of his patients.

Dr. Abraham Anderson was cutting edge in the services which he provided to women of all socio-economic incomes, including to those who had no insurance at all, and he trained hundreds, if not thousands, of medical students and young physicians in the numerous procedures which he mastered over the years.

He truly loved science and technology.  He owned the original Apple Macintosh 128k computer, and his children used this Macintosh as their very first computer.  He owned the very first cellphones and car cellphones (they were HUGE!), and encouraged his medical colleagues to invest in them.  He was even an original owner of a Ford (Lincoln-Mercury) Merkur XR4Ti, well-loved, though short-lived...

A lover of cuisine and fine dining, Dr. Anderson and his wife, Gloria, who holds a Doctorate in Psychology, purchased the Chick's Beach Cafe located at 4600 Lookout Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23455 (now HK on the Bay) in the early-80's.  Just two blocks from the Chesapeake Bay shoreline, the restaurant served American and Caribbean-inspired fish and seafood dishes in a fine casual setting to the accompaniment of live performances by well-loved local musicians.  The restaurant became became popular for its friendly atmosphere, as well as its fun, colorful cocktails.

Before going off to college, the two older Anderson children, Ruth and Anthony, both participated in the operation of this family restaurant, working at the Cafe in various capacitie
s over the years.

Together with his brother, Dr. Winston Anderson, a tenur
ed Professor of Biology (now Professor Emeritus) at Howard University in Washington, DC, Dr. Abraham Anderson also purchased "Bird's Nest", a staffed vacation villa in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.  Bird's Nest became known for its beautiful northern view of Ocho Rios Bay, the abundance of fruit trees and lovely hummingbirds on its grounds, and for the tasty meals prepared by Merlene, the villa's caretaker and chef.
